Onion export continues to run above average

May 8, 2024 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

The sentiment on the onion market was poor in the second half of April. Nevertheless, the export is not completely disappointing. For the second week in a row, the export figure is above the five-year average.

In week 16, 15,985 tons of onions were exported. That is more than 2,000 tons less than in week 15. The five-year average is 15,453 tons. So, we are still above that. In total, 921,545 tons of onions have now been exported this season.

In week 16, Great Britain imported 2,894 tons of onions. In total, Great Britain has imported 114,386 tons of onions from the Netherlands this season. Only Senegal imported more onions, namely 170,465 tons. Brazil ranks second in the export list this week with 1,273 tons. They are also the only destinations that took more than 1,000 tons. Italy ranks third with 981 tons. West Africa is also relatively well represented for this time of year with Mauritania, Guinea, and Ivory Coast in the top 10.
