Ukraine imposes its own chicken export quota

June 4, 2024 - Matthijs Bremer

Ukraine sets a quota for poultry meat exports to the EU as of July 1. From July 1, no more than 137,000 tons of poultry meat may be exported per year.

On May 13, the European Union extended the free trade between the European Union and the country at war. However, there is a mechanism in place in case exports exceed the average of 2021, 2022, and 2023. Earlier, the chairman of the poultry processing industry association, Gert-Jan Oplaat, explained in Foodbusiness that the mechanism would effectively result in a quota of 137,000 tons of poultry meat per year.

In practice, the market is responsible for ensuring that the critical threshold is not exceeded. If it does happen, the old quota of 90,000 tons would be reinstated. To prevent triggering the mechanism, Ukraine is now imposing its own industry with the critical threshold of 137,000 tons as a quota, as stated in a recent announcement from the Ministry of LNV.
